2016/01/12

Q: According to the Japanese media, ships belonging to the Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force will be sent to urge Chinese naval ships to leave if they come within 12 nautical miles off Diaoyu Dao. What is your response?

A: China's position on Diaoyu Dao is consistent and clear. Diaoyu Dao and the affiliated islands have been China' s inherent territory since ancient times. China's resolve in upholding territorial sovereignty is unswerving. Meanwhile, an escalation of tension in the East China Sea is the last thing we want to see. We are willing to properly manage and settle the relevant issue through dialogues and consultations.

Q: Today, the World Bank announced the appointment of Yang Shaolin, Director General of the Department of International Economic and Financial Cooperation at the Ministry of Finance of China, as Managing Director and Chief Administrative Officer. What is China's response? Will China offer more support to the World Bank in the future?

A: The Chinese side welcomes this appointment. Since China resumed its lawful seat in the World Bank in 1980, the two sides have maintained sound relations of cooperation. China supports the World Bank in assuming a major role in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. China has been working with the international community for years to improve the governance structure of the World Bank so that it reflects changes in the world economic weights and give more voice and representativeness to developing countries. We will work with all parties to follow the latest roadmap and timetable for voting rights reform reached in 2015, enhance the World Bank's financial capability, and contribute our due share in ensuring an on-time realization of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Q: After DPRK's nuclear test, some countries call for tougher sanctions against the DPRK. What is China's comment?

A: In dealing with the current situation, we should bear in mind the goal of promoting denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, preventing nuclear proliferation, and maintaining peace and stability of Northeast Asia. What is imperative is for all parties to bring the Korean nuclear issue back to the track of dialogues and negotiations, jointly promote denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, and maintain peace and stability of Northeast Asia.

Q: The first meeting of the Quadrilateral Coordination Group of Pakistan, Afghanistan, China and the US on Afghan peace and reconciliation issued a joint statement, emphasizing the need for direct talks between representatives of the Government of Afghanistan and representatives from Taliban groups. How does China comment on the outcomes of the first meeting?

A: The Chinese side speaks highly of the relevant outcomes. The first meeting of the Quadrilateral Coordination Group of Pakistan, Afghanistan, China and the US on Afghan peace and reconciliation process saw the Group unanimously agree to implement the consensus reached at the 5th foreign ministerial meeting of the Istanbul Process on Afghanistan which was held last year. The Group reiterated the commitment to facilitating an Afghan-led and Afghan-owned reconciliation process and emphasized the immediate need for direct talks between representatives of the Government of Afghanistan and representatives from Taliban groups with a view to achieving lasting peace and stability in Afghanistan and the region.

On the premise of respecting Afghanistan's sovereignty and the will of all sides, China stands ready to work with all parties to create favorable conditions to that end.

Q: Today, China's Wanda Group announced its acquisition of Hollywood studio Legendary Entertainment. What is your comment? Is this a way for China to enhance its soft power and cultural influence?

A: Relevant enterprises made the decision on their own. We hope it can be conducive to the economic cooperation, cultural and people-to-people exchanges between China and the US.

Q: On January 10, the new parliament in Egypt convened its first plenary session, electing Ali Abdel-Al as its new speaker. What is your comment?

A: After forming a new parliament, Egypt held the first parliamentary session and elected a new speaker. All these demonstrate that Egypt's political transition process has come to a smooth end. China welcomes that and expresses its congratulations.

China and Egypt enjoy traditional friendship. China supports Egypt in exploring a development path that suits its national conditions and in making efforts to maintain social stability, promote economic development and improve people's livelihood.

Q: It is reported that there are some disputes in Pakistan about the plan for the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, which has caught media attention. What is China's comment?

A: To build the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor is an important consensus reached between leaders of the two sides. The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor will span the breadth and width of Pakistan, bring benefits to all the Pakistani people, and drive common development and prosperity of China, Pakistan and the whole region. As a long-term and systematic project, the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor needs scientific planning and step-by-step implementation. We stand ready to work with Pakistan to complete the projects under construction and make long-term plans to keep advancing the building of the Corridor.
