Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Ma Zhaoxu's Remarks
2010/11/02

Q: On the Diaoyu Island dispute, it is said that the US offered to China that it is willing to host a trilateral dialogue or talks between China, the US and Japan to push China and Japan to exchange views on a series of issues. Please confirm.

A: I would like to clarify relevant information on the talks between Chinese Foreign Minister and US Secretary of State in Hanoi. The two sides discussed strengthening cooperation between China, the US and Japan to work together for peace and development of the Asia-Pacific region. The US side proposed holding an official trilateral dialogue between China, the US and Japan. I would like to stress that this is only the thinking of the US side. China has always believed that various existing dialogue and cooperation mechanisms in Asia-Pacific should be made full use of so that they can play a more effective role in promoting peace and development in the region.

It has to be pointed out that the Diaoyu Island and its affiliated islands are China's inherent territory and the territorial dispute over the Diaoyu Island is a matter between China and Japan. It is extremely erroneous for the US to repeatedly claim that the Diaoyu Island falls within the scope of the US-Japan Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security. What the US should do is to immediately correct its wrong position. Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi and the Chinese Foreign Ministry have made clear to the US side China’s above solemn position many times on different occasions.
