Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hong Lei's Remarks on the Situation in Côte d'Ivoire

Q: The situation in Côte d'Ivoire has undergone significant changes in recent days as President-elect Alassane Ouattara's forces swept across several major cities including the political capital Yamoussoukro and entered the commercial capital Abidjan. The UN Security Council adopted a resolution on Côte d'Ivoire on March 30, urging Laurent Gbagbo to step down immediately. What is China's comment?

A: China is concerned over the current security situation in Côte d'Ivoire. We maintain that the post-election crisis of Côte d'Ivoire should be peacefully resolved through dialogue and negotiation and support the mediation efforts by the AU and ECOWAS. We call on all parties in Côte d'Ivoire to bear in mind the interests of the nation and people, earnestly implement relevant UNSC resolutions in a bid to restore national peace, stability and normality as soon as possible and take concrete measures to ensure the safety of civilians including foreign nationals.
