Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Ma Zhaoxu's Remarks on the Situation in Syria
2011/08/23

Q: Recently, the US and some European countries have strongly condemned the Syrian Government's repression on demonstrators, requiring President Bashar to step down. During his recent exclusive TV interview on the situation in Syria, Bashar highlighted political resolution as the choice for Syria which, however, will not be possible without the guarantee of safety. What is China's comment on the developments of the situation in Syria?

A: China follows closely the developments of the Syrian situation and calls on all parties there to exercise maximum restraint and discard violence so as to avoid further escalation of the situation and more casualties. China believes that the Syrian crisis should be dissolved through swiftly launching an inclusive political process led by Syria. All relevant parties in Syria should address problems through dialogue and consultation in a peaceful and appropriate manner. Syria should determine independently its future. The international community's relevant actions should be conducive to materializing the Syrian Government's reform commitment, encouraging all parties to join in the political process constructively and stabilizing the situation in Syria at an early date.
