Chinese Embassy's Letter to Helsingin Sanomat on Its Wrong Remarks on Hong Kong
2021-07-02 04:19

The Embassy of China in Finland noted that the Helsingin Sanomat published an open letter by the Editor-in-Chief and others on 1st July. We are very much concerned about the wrong remarks in it regarding Hong Kong, and we would like to respond as follows.

Hong Kong is governed by rule of law. The Basic Law and the Law on Safeguarding National Security in the Hong Kong SAR clearly safeguards the lawful rights and freedoms enjoyed by Hong Kong residents, including freedom of speech and the press. However, freedom of the press is not a get-out-of-jail-free card. No individual or organization is beyond the reach of law. The actions taken by the Hong Kong police against individuals and companies suspected of endangering national security are just efforts to combat crime and safeguard the rule of law and social order. They have nothing to do with press freedom. It is wrong if anyone claims it is a repression of "media freedom" just because the party involved in the case is a certain news agency and the suspects its executives. In fact, since the implementation of the national security law, social stability has been restored in Hong Kong, the rule of law and justice have been upheld, and the lawful rights and freedoms of Hong Kong residents and foreign citizens in Hong Kong are better protected in a safer environment.

Hong Kong affairs fall within China's internal affairs. The Chinese side will continue to fully and faithfully implement the principles of "One Country, Two Systems", and "Hong Kong people governing Hong Kong" with a high degree of autonomy, implement the Central Authorities' overall jurisdiction over the Hong Kong SAR, and implement the legal system and enforcement mechanisms for safeguarding national security in Hong Kong, so as to safeguard China's national sovereignty, security and development interests, and to maintain overall social stability and the long-term prosperity and stability of Hong Kong. We have full confidence for Hong Kong's tomorrow.
