China Today – Modern Development of an Ancient Art
Stoa´s gallery 19th September to 5th October 2003

The exhibition “China Today –Modern Development of an Ancient Art” comprises fifty-odd pieces of contemporary ceramic works of distinctive styles. The collection reflects the artistic exploration by contemporary Chinese potters, and may help to illustrate, in one way or another, the current development of this age-old art form in a nation with a long past, open to the world, and towards a new millennium. Since its debut in 1997, the exhibition has toured Spain, United Kingdom, Denmark, Norway, Italy, France, Czech, Austria and Bulgaria.

Zheng Zhong´s Plate Graphs

Zheng Zhong was born in Haian, Jiangsu Province in 1962 and graduated from the Researchers Class in Jiangsu Printmaking Institute in 1997 and from the Department of Printmaking in CAFA for master degree in 1999. He is a member of Chinese Printmaking Artists Association and lecturer in Jiangsu Printmaking Institute. Chinese National Museum of Fine Arts, China International Exhibition Agency of the Chinese Ministry of Culture, Egyptian National Printmaking Museum and the President of the Republic of Cyprus have collected Zheng Zhong´s works.
 
Zhang Zhenqi
Stoa´s upper gallery from 19th to 26th September 2003

Zhang Zhenqi was born in Hainan in 1934. After having served the Chinese army, he was transferred, in 1958 to civil work and became one of the representatives of the Great Northern Wilderness Woodcut School. His works have been exhibited in more than 40 countries including UK, France, USA and Japan, and collected by many museums in the world. 30 of his most representative works that are the masterpieces in his different creation periods will be shown during the Festival.
 
Characters in Beijing opera & Peking Opera Pictures
Kanneltalo gallery from the 19th September to 5th October 2003

The exhibition “Characters in Beijing Opera” presents stage characters of Beijing Opera in a three-dimensional miniature. The exhibition, composed of 60 pieces with an average height of 60 cm., is selected from 37 Beijing operas. The production of the art pieces, made of various kinds of materials, requires nearly a hundred different working procedures to be completed. Just like little messengers, the Characters in Beijing Opera, first of its kind to be created, is travelling abroad to extend its best regards to all the friends who love Chinese art and culture, in particular Beijing Opera.

China Tibetan Arts Exhibition
Malmitalo, from 19th to 26th September 2003  

Tibetan Buddhism exerted strong influence on various sectors of superstructures, literature, opera, music, dance, fresco, architecture, embossed embroidery and sculpture of the Tibetan society.
Tibetan folk art is rich and colourful. Of the dazzling variety of art forms, including proverbs, folk songs, jokes, stories and legends, King Gesar, the world´s longest epic, is most representative. It is known for complete sets of scripts and unique performing art. Folk opera, folk dance, garments, architecture arts, handicrafts, butter sculpture and stone carving are strongly tinged with Tibetan color.

Chinese book exhibitions
City libraries in Stoa, Kanneltalo and Malmitalo, from 19th September to 5th October. After the exhibitions all the books will be donated to the above-mentioned libraries.

Lin-Yue-Ran-Ran, Traditional Chinese Music Quartet are found most active on Beijing stage and loved by the audience. The group includes 4 young female members, who have received best education from conservatories of music in China. They are marvellous players of Chinese traditional instruments such as Erhu, Dulcimer, Zheng and Pipa. In 2002, the group gave a wonderful expression and performance in Washington, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, etc.
Liu Yan, from Beijing Opera and Dance Drama Theatre, is a new star in Chinese music circles. She will sing Chinese folk songs at the Chinese Cultural Festival in Helsinki.

Jin Yongzhe, is a famous lyric tenor of Chaoxian Nationality. By almost ten years studying, performing and teaching in the field of vocal music, as a young associate professor of China Conservatory Vocal Department, he has won prizes in many international singing competitions.

The Peking Opera Troupe of Beijing
The Peking Opera Troupe of Beijing was founded in 1979 growing out of the troupes, which were separately set up and starred by the famous great masters of Peking Opera. It is one of the Chinese largest performing arts organisations. It consists of some of the best directors, writers, performers and musicians in the country. The troupe has performed 300 traditional plays in its twenty years history.
Performances:
1. “The Crossroads”
This is a rollicking, joyous piece of drama, based on an ancient Chinese folktale. An upright and brave general, Jiao Zan, has been convicted and sentenced to exile. His commander is not convinced on his guilt and orders a young officer, Ren Tanghui, to secretly follow and protect him. Arriving at an inn situated at the junction of three roads, Jiao and his guards decide to stay over the night…


2. “Autumn River”
The story concerns the love of the scholar Pan Bizheng of the Song Dynasty (960-1279) and a young Buddhist nun, Chen Miaochang. Some time ago, Pan had gone to stay with his aunt, who is abbess of the temple where Chen lives. A romance develops and on learning about their secret meetings, the abbess immediately sends her nephew to sit for the imperial examination in the capital. He is forced to leave without saying goodbye to his sweetheart…

3. “The Jumping Birth-Death Officer”
The birth-death officer is said to be a full-time official who is in charge of the register of births and deaths in the nether world, and who decides the life expectancy of everybody in this world. A Hualian (painted face) actor plays the role of the birth-death officer. He looks peculiar and exaggerative with unique and beautiful facial makeup.

China Acrobatic Troupe

China Acrobatic Troupe was founded in 1950 under the attention of late Premier Zhou Enlai. It is the first national acrobatic troupe in new China. In the past 50 years, the troupe developed itself greatly. It carried on the traditional acrobatic essence, absorbed the valuable elements from music, dancing, drama and martial arts. All these efforts made it become one of the strongest acrobatic troupes of China. It has toured in many countries on behalf of China and won 32 gold prizes at the domestic and international competitions.

Chinese National Minorities Costumes Defile (Free entrance)
The program is for families, including a defile of Chinese national minorities costumes and Chinese Tea House. The Chinese Embassy’s staff will perform the 20 min. long show.

Wang Yuzhen, the president of Beijing Peking Opera Theatre, is internationally well known for her speech with regard to Three Aesthetic Characteristics of Beijing Opera delivered at UNESCO´s Mansion in France. She is also a famous "Danjue" (female character type in Beijing Opera) as well as a well-known "Daomadan" (female character type with knife and horse in Beijing Opera). She made more than 300 shows and the opera become very popular in Beijing city.

Eyes of A Beauty, 90 min.
This is an up-to-date story which took place in Zhuji, an ancient southern town in China, where once fostered a famous beauty, Xishi, in ancient China. The film tells 3 different stories of 3 different Chinese women. Axi, a young girl, runnig a tea stall in Wuxie, Shiyu a 26-year old teacher in Zhuji, preparing her own wedding, and Mrs. Lianwen, an actress of Yue Opera, getting older and older…    

Red Sorghum, 90 min., produced by Xi’an Film Studio
This is a story about my grandma and grandpa. They fall in love with each other in the sorghum field; they fight the Japanese in the sorghum field; and it is said that the sorghum wine they make can be used to cure any disease. Their glorious life then becomes a legend. This film won the “Golden Bear” prize at the 38th Berlin International Film Festival.

Shadow Magic, 90 min., director: Hu An, produced by Xi´an Studio Film
Laymen, a film artist from Europe, came, at the beginning of the 20th century, to Beijing to show films. Liu Jinglun, working at a photo studio, was so excited when he saw the film. Meanwhile, Tan Xiaoling, the daughter of a Peking opera maestro, fell in love with Liu. Unfortunately, Laymen was driven out of the country by the Empress…

The Road Home, 83 min., director: Zhang Yimou, produced by Guangxi Film Studio
Zhao Di, a young and beautiful girl with clever hand and quick mind, falls in love with the pristine and humorous young teacher, Luo. However, at such a happy moment, an unexpected tragedy falls upon them: Luo is categorized as the Rightist for no reason…  

Golden Dart Huang Tianba, 90 min., produced by Beijing Film Studio
During Emperor Kangxi in the Qing Dynasty, Huang Tianba, one of four local despots at Ehu Village stops doing evil and, under the instruction of his father and the guidance of Shi Shilun, the magistrate of Yangzhou, he return to a lawful way of living…  

The Emperor and the Assassin, 2 h 43 min.
Set in the 20th Century B.C., the Emperor and the Assassin tells the story of Ying Zheng, a power-hungry heir to the throne of the Kingdom of Qin, whose only goal is to conquer the other six kingdoms existing in China, and merge them into his own. Ying Zheng gains the help of his concubine Zhao, who travels to the kingdom of Han, in order to prepare the final assault…

The Last Empress, 90 min.
In December 1922, the wedding ceremony of Puyi, the deposed emperor of the Qing Dynasty, is held. Wanrong, the young bride, is pushed to the throne of empress. Nine years later, Wenxiu, the imperial concubine, gets divorced from Puyi who becomes, in 1934, the emperor of “Manchukuo”, the Japanese puppet regime. However, Wanrong is unwilling to live as a puppet…

Song of Tibet, 102 min.

The film tells about a romance of a woman and three men and their confusing feelings. The heavenly Goddness San Sheng Mu, in spite of the opposition of her brother Dod Erlang, descended to earth with Lotus Lantern, married the scholar Liu Yanchang and subsequently gave birth to a baby son named Chenxiang. The family lived a happy life. However, God Erlang threatened the Goddness to return the Lotus Lantern by kidnapping Chenxiang…

One quiet evening, a boy named Beibei is born in the local hospital while an unidentified flying object sweeps across the city.
